The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is one of three National Boards of Secondary Education and offers school education through Open and Distance Learning Mode. It is the largest open school in the world with the largest number of courses available, supported by print and electronic media. It has been vested with the authority to enrol, examine and certify learners’ upto a pre-degree level.
The Open Schooling courses of study of NIOS have the same standard and equivalence as the courses of study of other state/national level Board of School Education. Learners have joined colleges and professional institutions after completing their studies in NIOS. NIOS develops it own curriculum, self learning material and media support programmes utilising expertise of faculty from various Academic and Vocational Education institutions/organizations.
Open Schooling encourages flexibility and freedom to learn. Learners can learn at any time and at their own pace. Further details about NIOS as a stream of education & prospectus can be found on the official government website www.nios.ac.in.
Highlights of NIOS schooling:
There is no upper age limit for admission. However the minimum age of enrolment is 14 for secondary and 15 for senior secondary course.
The learner has an option to choose any subject combination from the list of subjects offered in the scheme of studies in the below table . In addition vocational courses are also offered.
The public examination are conducted by NIOS twice a year . A learner gets nine chances to appear in the public exam over a period of five years to complete.
The learner has an flexibility of transfer of credit to a maximum of two passed subjects from a recognised board of school education.
Students who pass out of NIOS are qualified to seek admissions in All India as well as State Medical, Engineering and various competitive examinations such as IIT, JEE, NEET and other professional courses on all the universities across the country and many prominent universities overseas, as well. They are also authorized to seek Government jobs, be it State or Central government.

5. The Pupil Saveetha Eco School Chennai:
The Pupil prepares for the Secondary and Senior Secondary Courses of the NIOS. The Secondary level certification is equivalent to the completion of Class X, and the Senior Secondary level certification is equivalent to the completion of Class XII.
ELIGIBILITY
Secondary Level
The candidate must have passed Class VIII, and have a valid proof of attaining at least 14 years of age to register for the course.
Senior Secondary Level
The candidate must have passed a Secondary Course from any one of the recognized boards (Eg. Secondary Course of NIOS, Class X of CBSE, ICSE or any recognized State Board), and have a valid proof of attaining at least 15 years of age for registration.

SELECTION OF SUBJECTS
Students can choose any combination of subjects offered by NIOS.
For obtaining a pass certificate at each level, a learner must pass a minimum of five subjects including at least one or a maximum of two languages.
In addition, a learner can also opt for two additional subjects thus, gets an opportunity to learn a maximum of seven subjects.
